JERRY SLOAN, the principal researcher and co-author of Without Justice for
All, a book about the political activities of the Radical Religious Right in
California, has been a Sacramento resident for over 16 years. He holds a
Graduate of Theology degree from the Baptist Bible College, Springfield MO,
where he graduated in 1957.
Always controversial, he has been described as:
- "gutsy" by the San Francisco Sentinel
- "a real hero" by late night San Francisco KGO Radio talk show host Ray
Taliaferro;
- a "demagogue" in an editorial of the Sacramento Union written by Joseph
Farah;
- "nut case" by Joe Yocca, former chief of staff for Senator Rob Hurtt, Jr.,
the Radical Religious Right leader who is the Minority Leader in the
California Senate.
- "a fascist and a scumbag" by CA Assemblymember Steve Baldwin (R-A.D. 77, San
Diego)
He is best known for his 1984 law suit for breach of an oral contract
against the Rev. Jerry Falwell, his former schoolmate at Baptist Bible
College. Sloan won the lawsuit and collected almost $ 9000 from Falwell. The
profits of the lawsuit were used to help start the Lambda Community Center.
He is also a former licensed minister of the Metropolitan Community Churches
and founder of MCC congregations in Des Moines and Wichita and was Senior
Pastor of Agape MCC, Ft. Worth TX.
As an activist for gay/lesbian/bisexual/ transgender rights he is the
founder in 1984 and President Emeritus of the Lambda Community Fund and
principal founder of the Lambda Community Center and the Lambda Freedom Fair
in Sacramento. He has served on volunteer community action committees of all
sorts which are too numerous to mention.
He has been tracking the political contributions and activities of right
wing groups since 1980 when he started monitoring the political contributions
of the Coors Brewing Co in California.
In 1991 he and Marghe Covino co-founded Project Tocsin to monitor the political activities of the Religious Right in California. The word *tocsin*
is an arcaic Engilsh word which means a bell used as signal warning of danger
or the sound made by it.
Sloan has received numerous community awards in recognition of his volunteer work for many human rights causes among them are:
- the Everett Denman Brown Spoon Award (1995)
- the Tim Warford Community Service Award(1993)
- The Lambda Community Center's Founder's Award (1992)
